Arlington County, separated from our nation’s capital city by the Lincoln Memorial Bridge, is distinguished as the most urban of Virginia’s counties and the second smallest county in the United States. The presence of the federal government in this area is considerable, employing nearly half of the county’s work force. Commercial development is booming as well. Ballston Common, the Crystal City Shops, Sequoia Plaza and Stafford Place are just a few of the reasons that this bustling, cosmopolitan area is often called “Little Manhattan.”
Arlington is also home to many military sites, national landmarks and memorials such as Arlington National Cemetery — with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Kennedy’s Gravesite — the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the Pentagon. Although the county has no incorporated towns, well-defined districts like Rosslyn and Crystal City offer concentrated high-rise developments for commercial and residential use. Expansion is also taking place in the Ballston area, close to the Metrorail station. The ends of five bridges, all crossing the Potomac, are located in Arlington County and provide the link into the District of Columbia for most Northern Virginian commuters. Excellent bus service, 10 Metrorail stations, and a strong network of highways ensure an easy commute for residents. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is close by for air travel convenience.
Quality of Life
With its city ambiance, Arlington County appeals to those who appreciate sophistication, excitement, activity, and urban conveniences. Ultra-modern construction contrasts with the Art Deco look of the 30s and 40s to give the area an engaging sense of charm and vitality. Convenience is the key word in Arlington County. Shopping, from modern supermarkets to gourmet shops and open-air farmer’s markets are all within a short walk of most neighborhoods.
The selection of available housing is diverse and attractive. New residents can choose from established neighborhoods where single-family homes line tree-canopied streets. Townhouses and condominiums have been designed in both garden style and high rise for a maintenance-free lifestyle with all the spacious comfort of a true home. A limited selection of new construction is also available. Because of its density and limited area, Arlington County does not offer the opportunities for acreage and expansion that some other metropolitan area counties enjoy.
Two regional parks — Upton Hill and Potomac Overlook, a 100-acre nature preserve along the Potomac Palisades — provide residents with a naturally beautiful and tranquil retreat from the hectic urban environment. The rose garden at Bon Air Park with its azaleas and miniature roses is a popular place for a leisurely stroll. Throughout the county, newcomers will find community centers, playgrounds, ballfields, hiking and biking trails, tennis courts and swimming pools. Arlington County also sponsors a number of leagues for baseball, football and basketball for all ages. Those who are looking for a stimulating environment will find Arlington County an ideal blend of relaxed Virginian hospitality and the high energy of our nation’s capital.
